Director of Chapel Music
Stephen Barker BA(hons), MMus, PGCE
Steve has been actively involved in church music since the age of six. He held an Organ Scholarship for two years prior to coming to read Music at Christ Church in 1995. While an undergraduate, Steve directed the Chapel Choir and was organist for the Junior Kings School. In his final year he was appointed Organist and Choirmaster at St Stephen’s Church, Canterbury, a post which he continues to this day, running a strong choir of over 40 singers who sing weekly Sung Eucharist and Choral Evensong, and in several cathedrals each year. After graduating Steve focused on his teaching career but never lost his passion for studying, returning to Christ Church to study for a Masters in Church Music. It was during this period that Steve took on the directorship of the Chapel Choir again and this has since developed into more of a mentor role, overseeing the provision of Music in the Chapel and passing on his knowledge of church music and liturgy. In August 2011, Steve was appointed an Associate Lecturer of Canterbury Christ Church University, working on the Church Music Foundation Degree in partnership with the Royal School of Church Music.
